Mental Health Care for Children

Seeking professional help for a child’s mental health is one of the most difficult decisions a parent has to make. The staff at West Oaks Hospital understands parents’ concerns regarding the treatment process. We encourage parents to actively participate in their child’s treatment to learn new management skills and receive support from other parents. We give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential in an environment that fosters success.

Our children’s mental health services are designed for children ages 5 to 12 with emotional and behavioral problems that interfere with daily life. They may express these issues in a variety of ways such as impulsive or defiant behaviors, inability to concentrate, extreme or prolonged mood swings or physical aggression.

The daily activities of all children’s services are designed to enhance problem solving, communication skills and self-esteem. Program goals are reinforced through the following modalities:

  • Individual, group and family sessions
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Multi-family group
  • Parent education and support group

Children’s Treatment Programs

Inpatient care is for children with mental health issues that require 24-hour hospitalization. This program provides them with structure and intensive care. We strongly encourage active participation from every family member.

Day treatment is intended for children who do not require overnight care. To accommodate family members’ schedules, the program may be adapted to morning, afternoon or partial weekly treatment.
